04 / 92NY · SCHOOL ENGAGEMENT IN THE ARTS

Making room
for the arts.

A production spanning several months, telling the story of arts education in New York City public schools that might otherwise go without it.

THE PROGRAM

Art belongs
in the school day.

92NY’s School Engagement in the Arts connects New York City public-school students with teaching artists, performances, and opportunities to make art themselves.

For schools without the budget for an arts teacher or a program of their own, those opportunities matter. This piece brings together the people making that access possible and the students it reaches.

MY CONTRIBUTION

A story built
over months.

01

Keeping the production moving

I led this project over several months, gathering footage and keeping the larger story in view as the material came together.

02

Going where the story is

We visited a public school in the Bronx to capture the program in the classroom. That footage gave the piece a view of arts education as part of the school day.

03

Making room for different voices

I conducted interviews with teachers, students, and a principal. Each brought a different perspective on what the program means to a school and to the children in it.
